Fort Saskatchewan hires new fire chief
Shawn McKerry joins the department June 5
The City of Fort Saskatchewan is pleased to announce the appointment of Shawn McKerry as Fort Saskatchewan’s new Fire Chief effective June 5. McKerry is currently the Deputy Fire Chief in Parkland County and was Deputy Chief in Yellowhead County from 2008 to 2011. McKerry also has years of experience as an Emergency Response Manager in the private sector.
“The most impactful experiences of my career to date have been acting as the Incident Commander for Parkland County's Duffield Fire in 2016, the CN Train Derailment in Gainford (Parkland County) in 2013 and being deployed to assist at the Lesser Slave Lake Wildfire in 2011,” McKerry stated.
McKerry brings a wealth of knowledge with him that includes a Degree in Fire and Emergency Services Administration and a Masters in Emergency Management. He currently sits as an advisor for the Emergency Services Technology Diploma program at Lakeland College and was a former student and instructor in the program.
Current Fire Chief James Clark announced his retirement effective October 2, 2017 but will be relocating to City Hall on June 5 to complete special projects for the department.“It is always bittersweet to say farewell to a valued and trusted individual in your organization like Chief Clark but we know that Fort Saskatchewan will welcome Shawn to the community and help him settle into his new position,” commented Brenda Rauckman, GM of Community and Protective Services.
