City Centre Square Advisory Committee

A new Advisory Committee at work

In October 2009, City Council approved the recommendations and advice of the Civic Precinct and Civic Building Advisory Committee to develop a new civic precinct concept in our downtown to bring our public and library services closer together,while creating or renovating meeting and programming spaces to be shared with local community groups. Council also approved a Public Vote on the project for June 7, 2010.*

The new advisory committee consists of 2 representatives of the Public Library, 1 representative of Pioneer House Club 50, 1 representative of Family & Community Support Services (FCSS), 2 City Council members and 7 members at large. At the first meeting on January 14, Dallas Kristiansen was elected Chair of the Committee and John Mather was elected as Co-Chair.

The committee has developed a Community Engagement Plan that was approved by Council on February 9, 2010. (See below under Additional Resources.)

Other projects will include:

  • branding strategies;
  • a list of potential community groups in need of space; and
  • a list of potential unique or trendy businesses or services that can be accommodated in the development of the project.

The Advisory Committee has 3 members sitting on the Steering Committee with members of Council and the Project Management Team.

Barr Ryder Architect is working with the Advisory Committee, the Steering Committee and the Project Management Team to create a concept that will be presented to the public in April. An information campaign is scheduled to commence during the Chamber of Commerce Annual Trade show in April. The goal of the information campaign is to provide all necessary information on the development of a Civic Precinct so citizens can make an informed decision on June 7. Details of the information campaign can be found in the Community Engagement Plan.

*All individuals 18 years of age or over, who are Canadian citizens, have resided in Alberta for the 6 consecutive months prior to the vote and reside in Fort Saskatchewan on the date of the vote, may participate in the vote.
