Environmental Awareness Committee

Who We Are
The Environmental Awareness Committee was formed by the City of Fort Saskatchewan Council in the spring of 1990, to advise Council on local environmental issues. The Committee is made up of voluntary representatives of the public, industry, the Elk Island School Board, the Lakeland Regional Health Authority, and Fort Saskatchewan City Council.

The Committee's mandate is to seek public opinion on the environment, review, research, prioritize issues, and make recommendations to City Council. The Committee welcomes concerns from individuals or groups in our community.

In 1990 and 1995, public opinion surveys were conducted to identify the environmental issues citizens were most concerned about. In both surveys, the top three concerns were:

  • Air Quality.
  • Water Quality.
  • Ground Pollution (Waste)

Since our inception the Committee has:

  • Obtained funding from Health Canada and Environment Canada via the Community Animation Project (C.A.P.) to produce an Environmental Update
  • Provided Alberta Environmental Protection's air quality monitoring reports to the local public library for community access.
  • Created the "Grass Clippings are Not Garbage Campaign" for the City of Fort Saskatchewan.
  •  Produced updates in Air and Water Quality and Waste Management to the community.
  • Met with the members of the Joint Industry-Municipal North Saskatchewan River Study to ask questions on the public's behalf.
  • Toured industrial plants, the Capital Region Sewage treatment plant, and the Laidlaw Waste treatment facility.
  • Annually helped with the Great Canadian Shore Clean-up of the North Saskatchewan River shore.

The Environmental Awareness Committee is committed to finding the answers to your questions and we are proud of our accomplishments. We hope you enjoy our section on the web page.

Please forward any concerns you have directly to the Recording Secretary at: info@fortsask.ca
