Mayor Jim Sheasgreen was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. Jim has been married to Christine for 37 years and they have raised three adult children, Kelly-Ann, Jennifer and Jim Jr. Jim and Christine are proud grandparents to two grandsons, Elliot Edward Spratlin and James Joseph "Beckett" Sheasgreen and one granddaughter, Cecilia Joan Spratlin.
Jim has his Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education, Certificate in Personnel Management and Masters Degree in Educational Administration. Jim was the Superintendent of Schools for 13 years (1985 - 1998) in Falher, Alberta and Fort Saskatchewan. From 1998 - 2003, Jim was the Deputy Superintendent for Elk Island Catholic Schools. And, before retiring in March, 2005, he was the Deputy Superintendent for the Northern Gateway Regional Division No. 10.
Jim was elected as Councillor for the City of Fort Saskatchewan in October 2001, elected as Mayor in October 2004 and acclaimed as Mayor in October 2007.
Jim is an active member on the City's various municipal boards and is currently Council representative on the following boards:
- Alberta's Industrial Heartland Association (Past Chair)
- Assessment Review Board
- Capital Region Board
- Downtown Redevelopment Advisory Committee
- Economic Development Board
- Intermunicipal Relations Committee - City of Fort Sask./Strathcona County
- River Valley Alliance (Alternate)
- Subdivision Approving Authority
- The Mayor serves as ex-officio on all municipal boards.
Working as a cohesive team with all of City Council and the City's Senior Management Team, Jim's priorities as Mayor are as follows:
- Managing the growth and development being experienced by the City in a planned and reasoned manner.
- Enhancing the quality of life for all residents through the responsible use of available resources that includes among other things:
- safer streets and neighbourhoods;
- addressing issues related to vandalism and crime;
- developing a comprehensive affordable housing plan and strategy for people of all ages.
- Revitalizing the downtown core.
- Enhancing the City's Historical Corridor that includes the re-creation of the 1875 NWMP Fort.
- Developing a long-term Recreation Master Plan.
- Developing a long-term tax strategy and financial plan for the City.
- Advocating for the presence of a post-secondary institution.
- Continuing to work with the Capital Health Authority and the Province on the building of our new replacement hospital.
- Maintaining the antonomy of Fort Saskatchewan within the Capital Region while working with all partners on the Capital Region Growth Plan.
