Grade 4 Education Program

Bringing History to Life and Life to History!

The Fort Saskatchewan Museum & Historic Site is pleased to offer a new Education Museum Program for Grade 4, where students will develop knowledge, understanding and historical thinking on:
  • Alberta: A Sense of Land
  • The Stories, Histories and People of Alberta
  • Alberta: Celebrations and Challenges
This is a fun and interactive way to introduce students to the science of archaeology.   From surveying to excavation to analysis, students will work hands on at a simulated archaeological dig site.  They will learn about the importance of finding and preserving artifacts and history as well as what each artifact can tell us about the people, the geography and the natural resources of the area.

Curriculum:

This program explores the following areas of study in the Grade 4 curriculum:
  • Appreciate how Alberta's pre-historic heritage contributes to the province's unique character
  • Learn how ownership of a discovered artifact can be determined
  • Discover what First Nations originally inhabited different areas of the province
  • Explore how geography, climate and natural resources affected the way of life in Alberta
  • Understand how archaeological and historical sites reflect the communities in Alberta
  • Solve problems by sorting and classifying information and objects
Program Delivery:

The Educational Museum Program for Grade 4 is easy to incorporate into your curriculum! A resource binder will be delivered to the teacher with all of the materials required.

Programs run Tuesday and Thursday mornings from April to June and September to October. Each program is three hours in length and has a maximum of one class per booking.

The Museum Program Assistant and staff will be on hand to lead the activities.

The school is to provide a teacher and at least two parent volunteers.

2009 Cost: $ 5.00 per student

Topics of Discovery:

The Grade 4 program is set up in three areas of study:
  • Surveying
  • Excavation
  • Analysis
The Surveying Station will be set up so that students will learn how to survey the land and determine which characteristics could indicate an archaeological dig site.

At the Excavation Station, students will have the opportunity to excavate, screen the soil removed from the site, map and measure any artifacts found.

During the Analysis portion of the program, students will work in a laboratory setting to participate, interact and study to determine what kind of archaeological site the artifacts came from.
