                                     CITY OF FORT SASKATCHEWAN

FIRE PITS

 Applications are required prior to construction or installation of a fire pit and are available at the Fort Saskatchewan Fire Hall, 10099 - 93 Avenue. All fire pits must be applied for, inspected and approved prior to use. This includes existing firepits as well as relocated and newly constructed pits. 

 Process:

  • Fire pit applications will be issued to property owners only. Renters must obtain written documentation from the owner addressed to the Fire Department agreeing to a fire pit being built on their rental property.
  • Permit Fee - $ 10.00.
  • Site plan - detailed drawing of the property showing the location of the fire pit and measurements from any adjacent, buildings/fencing/deck/trees or other combustible objects. 
  • Construction Design -A drawing of or a brochure on style, type and material used for the fire pit construction. (Note: Some portable fire pits are acceptable but their placement must remain as designated on the approved site drawing.)

 Building a Fire Pit: 

City of Fort Saskatchewan Bylaw No. C5-00 and Guidelines, which include the following conditions:

  • Three (3) meters from any structure including but not limited to a fence, or deck, trees or shrubs, from the eave of the nearest building, including but not limited to garage, sheds or house to the closest edge of fire pit.
  • Fire pit must be surrounded by one (1) meter of a non-combustible material such as but not limited to gravel, shale, concrete, sand, etc.
  • Covered with heavy gauge metal spark retention screen having a mesh size no larger than thirteen (13) millimeters.
  • The fire pit is for the purpose of cooking or obtaining warmth, not for refuse disposal.
  • Fires in pit will only be fueled with dry wood, charcoal, coal, natural gas or propane. If using natural gas or propane, owner must provide the Safety Codes Office in the Fire Discipline with proof of an approved gas inspection by a Safety Codes Officer in the Gas Discipline.
  • If at any time the fire pit is moved, rebuilt or replaced, a new application and inspection is required.

 Prior to use, a final inspection must be completed on the fire pit by a Safety Codes Officer in the Fire Discipline.

Safety First – when using your fire pit:

  • Winds not to exceed 25 km/h
  • Person (18 years of age or older) shall be outside in attendance at all times fire is burning.
  • Smoke shall not interfere with adjacent property owners/occupants that will affect the enjoyment of their property and/or home.
  • Fire to be extinguished completely prior to leaving area.
  • Fire pits will not be used if a complete fire ban has been issued.
