Composting makes good economical sense.  It is a natural process whereby grass clippings, leaves, and kitchen organics rot. Home composting simply speeds up the natural process.

Why Compost?
  • You divert waste material from landfill which saves the cost of disposal.
  • You improve soil structure for gardens and yards, and it is a positive contribution to saving our environment.
  • It makes the finest possible soil conditioner, as good or better than any commercial fertilizer on the market.

What can I Compost?
  • Leaves and grass clippings and kitchen waste – no meat or dairy products.

What NOT to Compost!
  • Meat and Dairy Products/Waste
    Grease and Oil
  • Pet feces (Dog/Cats)
  • Diseased Plants
  • Non-Biodegradable Materials

Where can I Compost?
  • Use a backyard composter for household waste.  These can be purchased at most of the local hardware stores.

What do I do with the Compost when it is ready for use?
  • Mix it into your garden soil in the fall and Mulch it with new plantings.
  • Break it up and use it for top dressing your lawn.

Problems with Composting? Unpleasant Odour from Pile?

There is most likely not enough oxygen circulating through the pile.

  •  If it is due to compaction, simply aerate and turn the pile.
  •  If it is due to too much watering, add leaves to soak up the excess water.

The Compost Pile is not Heating Up

If your compost pile does not heat up, it will not compost.  It likely is lacking nitrogen.

  •  Just add fresh grass clippings and fresh manure.
  •  The pile may not be moist enough, add water.
  •  The pile may need to be turned.
  •  The compost process may be complete.

The Compost Pile is Damp and only Warm in the Centre?
  • Your compost pile may be too small, add more to the compost pile.
