Transition
On the cusp of change
In February, the Alberta Lottery Fund Art
Gallery welcomes back David Shklony. David was last featured at the art gallery in October 2007 with his work in pastels. This new exhibit is a unique opportunity to see an artist's work on the cusp of change. The focus of David Shkolny's work for the past decade has been exclusively in the medium of soft pastel. A medium literally mined from the earth, it is the most direct of painting methods, leaving the brush behind in favour of a "digital" application.
Choosing landscape as his primary subject, Shkolny has worked in an impressionist style for much of his artistic career. It is the prerogative of the artist to challenge himself. However, it is less a conscious desire to do so, than simply a natural progression that feels "right".
Far from abandoning his interest in light, colour, and texture (all hallmarks of Impressionism), Shkolny has instead brought them to the fore, and the pursuit of traditional pictorial space has largely receded. Here, sky is not passive background, but an advancing presence, engaged in a struggle to wrest the land from its moors. Horizon lines blur and sizzle, and it is as if the air itself is dissolving patches of land before our eyes.
David spent his childhood here in Fort Saskatchewan and has spent the last ten years working with soft pastels. David's art is collected internationally and is represented in The Canada Council Art Bank. David also spends his time teaching others to experience the joy of working with pastels. He is teaching a class at the end of February here in Fort Saskatchewan.
Everyone is invited to a "Meet & Greet" with the Artist on Friday, February 3 at 6:30 pm.
The Alberta Lottery Fund Art Gallery is located in the lobby of the Shell Theatre at the Dow Centennial Centre and is open to the public every Thursday and Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. from February 2 to February 24 and prior to shows at the Shell Theatre.
