The best place to cross a street is at a marked crosswalk. Marked crosswalks have higher visibility and have signs to show drivers pedestrians cross the road at this location. If a marked crosswalk isn’t available, then crossing at a street corner is the next a safest choice.

Here are some safety tips for pedestrians:

  • Be Visible. Carry a light at night, wear bright or reflective clothing
  • Be Alert. Remove head phones and put your cell phone away –especially when crossing the street
  • Be Proactive. Always stop, look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before entering a crosswalk

Crosswalk safety tips for drivers:

  • Yield the right of way to pedestrians in, or stopped, at a crosswalk
  • Drive cautiously when approaching any intersection
  • Drive within the speed limit
  • Never pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk –it may be waiting for a pedestrian to cross
  • Park at least 5 meters,or more, away from the near side of a crosswalk, so pedestrians can be seen

Drivers failing to yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk could face a fine of $776 and four demerit points.
