April is Parkinson Awareness Month
WHEREAS, Parkinson disease is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder for which there is currently no known cause or cure; and
WHEREAS, symptoms include slowness, tremor, difficulty with balance, speaking and swallowing, rigidity, cognitive and memory problems; and
WHEREAS, for the thousands of Albertans affected by the disease life can be a challenging journey; and
WHEREAS, Parkinson Alberta is the only charitable organization in the province providing direct support, services, programming and education to people living with Parkinson disease; and
WHEREAS, Parkinson Alberta provides to the communities and regions of Alberta support, programming, information and education, to those living with Parkinson disease, their loved ones, caregivers and health professionals; and
WHEREAS, April has been proclaimed as World Wide Parkinson Awareness Month for all to recognize the need to increase the level of understanding of Parkinson disease, to continue to improve and expand the level of support for those whose lives are affected by Parkinson disease and the need for more research to help find more effective treatments and therapies, and ultimately a cure for Parkinson disease.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Gale Katchur of the City of Fort Saskatchewan do hereby proclaim April as Parkinson Awareness Month.
