History of Downtown
From canoes to industry
Located on the banks of the North Saskatchewan river, Indigenous Peoples settled in the area and made birch bark canoes from the plentiful birch grove near the river. Many years later, the arrival of the NWMP, settlers and the railroad made their mark on the early days of Downtown Fort Saskatchewan. By the 1950’s industry came to the area and is still a major contributor to the area economy.
