Our City, Our Commitments: DEI
Meaningful Progress
The City of Fort Saskatchewan is encouraging our community to stay curious. As we learn together, we’ll create actionable, meaningful goals while delivering helpful resources for our residents.
This new journey is about welcoming, supporting, respecting and valuing individuals for their unique ideas, backgrounds, perspectives, talents and contributions. Being curious and intentional creates a better community for all. We’re glad you’re here. Let’s start together.
What is Diversity?
Diversity is a deep understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizes their individual differences. These human differences can refer to social identities and social group differences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, creed, colour, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual identity, socio-economic status, language, culture, national origin, religion/spirituality, age, ability, political perspective, and associational preferences.
What is Equity?
Equity rests on a framework that builds opportunity for all Fort Saskatchewan residents to thrive. Equality is different, implying that people are treated as if their experiences are exactly the same. Equity, on the other hand, is about acknowledging and addressing both past and current inequalities that advantage some and disadvantage others. Equal access to opportunities is paramount.
What is Inclusion?
Inclusion is about creating a city where all residents are respected, and know that they are. They should have a sense of belonging, feeling welcome to participate and contribute, achieving their potential. An inclusive environment means every individual is valued for the unique perspectives they add to our community.
Intention and direction set our course.
The City of Fort Saskatchewan adopted the Diversity and Inclusion Policy and Action Plan in 2019. These guiding documents are in place to ensure the organization grows in an inclusive, accessible and welcoming manner. The plan shows the organization's commitment to staff and the community and our desire for continual learning and growth.

Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities
In 2019, The City of Fort Saskatchewan joined The Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities which is a network that brings together municipalities that want to improve their policies against racism, discrimination, exclusion and intolerance. Its strength lies in the shared experiences of its members. Together, the municipalities undertake initiatives to eliminate all forms of discrimination with a view to building open and inclusive societies. In Canada, 77 cities are members of the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities.
