YOU ASKED

I’ve seen City workers opening fire hydrants and letting water rush out onto the street. Why do they do that?

Every year, City employees open fire hydrants to let the water flush out the waterlines. We flush the lines to keep them clean, and help make sure that our drinking water is safe.

While the water is being released, you may find that the water pressure in your home decreases temporarily. As well, you may notice that the water coming out of your tap is cloudy. This is caused by extra air in the lines. During flushing, the water is completely safe to drink.

Although it may look as though we are releasing a lot of water, the amount is very small, only about one-percent of the annual water usage is used in flushing.

Annual maintenance and hydrant flushing starts in May and runs through to the end of June.
