Resident Business Licence Renewal Fees $0 in 2021

At the October 27, 2020 Regular Council meeting, Council passed a bylaw amendment to waive the annual renewal fee for resident business licences in 2021. The decision was made to further assist local businesses who were forced to shut-down or saw sharp decreases in revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The COVID-19 pandemic forced many Fort Saskatchewan businesses to face a variety of complications from temporary closures to imposed restrictions, to the increased costs of maintaining a safe working environment for staff and patrons. The City partnered with the Fort Saskatchewan and District Chamber of Commerce to help our business community during these unprecedented times. Waving the resident business licence renewal fee for 2021 is another example of our commitment to helping develop a strong and resilient local economy.” - Mayor Gale Katchur

Businesses generally renew their licence for the next calendar year beginning in November. The renewal process remains unchanged and businesses will receive their renewal notifications on November 22, 2020. A valid 2020 resident business licences will be renewed for an additional year at no cost, but businesses are still required to renew their licence for 2021.

Renewing a business license allows the City to maintain up-to-date business records while expanding the City’s host of business support programs. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City has rolled-out multiple business support initiatives such as; formalizing a partnership with the Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce, creating the E-Commerce support grant, expanding existing Business Support Programs, initiating the Support Your Fort campaign (a shop local initiative), and introducing the Business Connection e-newsletter.

“Over the past eight months, members of the business community have done their best to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. The City is continuously striving to serve as a source of critical information and support through this unprecedented time. This initiative is another way the City is demonstrating how much we value our local businesses.” - Mark Morrissey, Director of Economic Development, City of Fort Saskatchewan.

The City’s business support initiatives are based on feedback received directly from the business community and the Fort Saskatchewan and District Chamber of Commerce.
