Urban Forest
The City of Fort Saskatchewan is located next to the kisiskâciwanisîpiy, also known as the North Saskatchewan River, in Treaty 6 Territory and Métis Region 4, and is surrounded by conservation areas and farmlands. The river valley supports forest, grassland, and wetland ecosystems, and provides great recreational opportunities.
The City is developing an Urban Forest Protection and Enhancement Plan to help increase the number of trees in the city while balancing the needs of a growing population. The Plan will:
- Show why the urban forest is important
- Collect important information about the urban forest
- Look at how the urban forest is managed now
- Deal with challenges that affect the urban forest
- Learn traditional ecological knowledge that impacts urban forests
- Create a plan to manage the urban forest in the future
