Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department Highlights Lithium-Ion Battery Safety this Fire Prevention Week
Fire Prevention Week™ runs October 5–11, 2025, and this year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” The City of Fort Saskatchewan and the Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department are reminding residents about the safe use, charging, and disposal of lithium-ion batteries.
“Lithium-ion batteries are in almost everything we use, and while they’re safe when handled properly, they can be dangerous if damaged or charged incorrectly,” said Fire Chief Todd Martens. “This year’s Fire Prevention Week is about giving simple, practical steps to reduce those risks.”
Fire Prevention Officer Mark Grocock added: “The most important things to remember are to buy only listed products, charge devices safely, and recycle batteries responsibly. Taking these precautions helps protect your family and your home.”
As part of Fire Prevention Week, the Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department, in partnership with IAFF Local 5277, is hosting a Fire Prevention Day Open House:
Date: Saturday, October 11, 2025
Time: 1:00 – 5:00 pm
Location: Walter Thomas Fire Station (10099 – 93 Ave)
The event will feature the Jr. FireFit Course, fire hall tours, battery safety demonstrations, and opportunities to connect with local firefighters. It is a free, family-friendly afternoon of fun, learning, and community spirit.
