Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department Urges Residents to Charge Safely

Fire Prevention Week™ runs October 4–10, 2026, and this year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” reminds residents that simple charging habits can help prevent fires.

The City of Fort Saskatchewan and the Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department are encouraging residents to use the right chargers, charge devices on hard, flat surfaces, and unplug them when they are fully charged.

“Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, from phones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools,” said Fire Chief Todd Martens. “Taking a few simple precautions when charging these devices can help keep your family and home safe.”

Residents should also watch for warning signs of a damaged battery, including excessive heat, swelling, smoke, or unusual smells. Larger items, such as e-bikes, scooters, and power tools, should be charged outside and away from exits whenever possible.

“Safe charging starts with paying attention to where and how you charge,” said Fire Prevention Officer Mark Grocock. “Use the charger approved by the manufacturer, keep devices on a hard surface while charging, and stop using a device if you notice anything unusual.”
