Lifejacket Loaner Station Returns to Harbour Pool for 2026

The City of Fort Saskatchewan, in partnership with the Lifesaving Society, is continuing its commitment to water safety with the return of the Lifejacket Loaner Station at Harbour Pool. The program is part of the Lifesaving Society’s WaterSmart® initiative, which promotes drowning prevention and safer water recreation practices across Alberta.

With the North Saskatchewan River running through the community and many residents enjoying Alberta’s lakes and waterways throughout the summer, water safety remains an important priority. According to the Lifesaving Society, drowning continues to be one of the leading causes of preventable death for children in Canada, with young children between the ages of 1 and 4 at the highest risk.

The Lifejacket Loaner Station will be available from Friday, May 15, at 4:00 pm through the Labour Day weekend, offering free access to lifejackets in a variety of sizes for infants, children, youth, and adults. The station is located outside Harbour Pool and is available during reception desk hours, seven days a week.

Program features include:

  • Free access to lifejackets for residents and visitors
  • A simple sign-in and sign-out process
  • Regular inspection and cleaning of all equipment
  • Educational resources on proper lifejacket fit and water safety

“Fort Saskatchewan residents spend a lot of time enjoying the river valley, lakes, and outdoor spaces during the summer months,” said Mayor Lisa Makin. “This program helps make water safety more accessible for families and visitors by removing barriers and encouraging safe habits around the water. Something as simple as wearing a properly fitted lifejacket can save a life.”

Residents and visitors are encouraged to borrow a lifejacket whenever needed and to practice safe boating and water recreation habits, including avoiding alcohol while on the water, closely supervising children, and taking certified boating safety courses.
