Celebrating Local Artists

Local artists selected for the 2026 Art in Public Places Program

The City of Fort Saskatchewan has announced the winners of the 2026 Art in Public Places Program, celebrating both emerging and established local talent during an unveiling event held April 14 at the Dow Centennial Centre’s Alberta Lottery Fund Art Gallery.

This year’s Student Category winner is Serenity by 15-year-old Sloane Riendeau. The painting explores the interplay of light and colour across the subject’s face, reflecting the idea that a range of emotions is always present and shaping our experiences.

In the Adult Category, Seven for a Secret Never to be Told by Glen Christenson was selected. Inspired by a traditional nursery rhyme, the piece reflects on the symbolism of magpies, a familiar sight in Fort Saskatchewan. The work incorporates a crescent moon form to highlight a shared global connection, reminding viewers that the same moon is visible across the world. As a kinetic piece, it shifts gently from the air, allowing different elements of the artwork to come forward over time and creating a sense of movement and life.

Mayor Lisa Makin spoke to the impact of the program and this year’s winners. “It’s inspiring to see both emerging and established artists recognized through this program,” said Mayor Makin. “These works not only showcase incredible talent but also invite reflection and connection. Public art like this helps tell our story and brings a sense of identity and pride to our shared spaces.”

The Art in Public Places Program reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to arts and culture, supporting local artists while enhancing public spaces throughout the community.
