Fort Saskatchewan Launches Green Organic Cart Waste Education & Audit Program

The City of Fort Saskatchewan is launching the 2025 curbside waste education & audit program starting May 12, with a focus on green organic carts. The program runs throughout the spring and summer.

As part of the initiative, Waste Educators will be conducting quick visual inspections of green organic carts on collection days. Heavily contaminated carts will be rejected or subjected to a fine as per the Waste Bylaw (C16 -18).

“Our team is identifying common sorting errors, addressing intentional misuse of the green organic carts, and recognizing great sorting when we see it,” says Sophie Angoh, Supervisor of Waste Programs. “When carts are sorted right and placed properly, it helps keep collection smooth and costs low — and that benefits everyone through consistent servicing costs.”

Residents may find doorhangers or golden sheep stickers left behind on their carts with either feedback or praise, depending on the findings. The Waste Educators will wear high-visibility safety gear and work during regular collection hours.

Carts should contain only organics such as food scraps and yard waste. Plastic bags, garbage, and other non-compostable items should not be placed in the green cart.

A reminder: please avoid putting soil or sod into your green organic cart. These materials create operational issues and are not accepted at the compost facility.

Residents are asked to drive carefully around the Waste Educators and give staff space to work safely.
