Sheep Grazing Program
Each summer since 1992, a flock of trained sheep, along with their shepherd and trained sheepdogs, take to the fields in Legacy Park and surrounding areas. The sheep provide an environmentally friendly way to manage vegetation across 12 hectares of parkland. This unforgettable community experience has been featured in national media as a symbol of small-town charm and sustainability.
Find the Flock
The sheep are in Fort Saskatchewan during the warmer months, usually from late spring to early fall. You’ll often find them grazing near Legacy Park. Visitors are welcome to watch and take photos, just remember to give them space and follow posted signs for safety.

Goats & Weed Management
You may see goats at West River’s Edge (WRE). They’re being used as a safe environmentally friendly alternative to weed management. They’ll cover up to 96 hectares and will treat effected areas up to three times over the summer and fall.
- Please keep dogs away from the fence, charging dogs frighten the goats.
- Signs will mark the daily work area.
- Two shepherds will guide the goats to targeted locations.
- We ask all residents and visitors to respect posted signs and give the goats and shepherds space to work.
