Planning to renovate or expand your home in Fort Saskatchewan?

From interior updates to major home additions, you may need a permit before starting work. This page helps you determine which projects, like kitchen remodels, new walls, or full additions, require development and/or building permits. Learn how to apply, what plans to submit, and where to send them to make sure your renovations are safe, legal, and up to code. 

Do I need permits for my home renovation?

Renovation Type Permit(s) Required
Addition Development permit, building permit
Interior renovation where walls are added or removed Building permit
Interior renovation where upper cabinets are installed Building permit
Interior renovation (cosmetic changes only – ex. new paint, flooring) No permits required
Kitchen renovation Building permit

As part of your application, you will need to submit:

  • Application forms
  • Floor plan showing walls, room sizes, room descriptions, window sizes and locations, doorways, etc.
  • Elevation drawings and site plan showing the new addition (addition projects only)

What about electrical, plumbing & gas permits?

If you are wiring, adding or moving any plumbing and/or gas fixtures, you would also require electrical, plumbing, and/or gas permits.

Fees

We price renovation permits using the Fees & Charges Bylaw. Permit costs depend on the floor area.
