Councillor Gale Katchur

Councillor Gale Katchur was born in Fort St. John, British Columbia, and is the youngest daughter of George and Evelyn Lewchuk. She was raised on a farm just outside Spirit River, Alberta, where she and her sister learned the value of hard work, responsibility, and pulling together as a family. Life on the farm meant daily chores, hauling wood and coal, planting large gardens, and living without many modern conveniences. These early experiences shaped Gale’s strong work ethic, resilience, and appreciation for community and teamwork. A love of the outdoors, sports, and time spent with family and friends were central to her upbringing and remain important to her today.

After completing her schooling, Gale moved to Edmonton where she worked for Alberta Agriculture and the Federal Dairy Division. It was during this time that she met her husband, Wayne. They were married two years later and eventually settled in Fort Saskatchewan, where they raised their two children, Ryan and Erin. Gale later transitioned into private industry, working for Baker International, before choosing to stay home to raise her family. During those years, she also operated a successful day home, further strengthening her connection to families and community life.

When her children were old enough to attend school full time, Gale re-entered the workforce and joined the City of Fort Saskatchewan as an Administrative Coordinator in Planning and Public Works. She spent 17 years with the City, gaining in-depth, hands-on knowledge of municipal government, policy, and operations. This professional experience provided a strong foundation for her later work as an elected official.

Gale announced her candidacy for City Council in September 2007 and was elected in October of that year, serving as a Councillor from 2007 to 2010. In 2010, she ran for Mayor and was elected on October 18, beginning what would become four consecutive terms as Mayor from 2010 to 2025. Over her 15 years as Mayor, Gale proudly represented and served the residents and businesses of Fort Saskatchewan, guiding the community through growth, change, and significant milestones.

Following her tenure as Mayor, Gale continues her commitment to public service in her current role as a City Councillor. She brings deep institutional knowledge, strong leadership, and a long-standing connection to the community to her work at Council.

Gale is a proud grandmother to four grandchildren and treasures the time she spends with her family, which remains her highest priority. She believes that success is measured not by material achievements, but by the positive impact we have on the lives of others, a principle that continues to guide her approach to public service.

For the current term, Councillor Katchur serves on or represents the City on the following boards and committees:

  • Arrow Utilities

  • Board and Committee Application Review Committee

  • City Manager’s Evaluation Committee

  • Community Grants Committee

  • Emergency Advisory Committee
