Mayor Lisa Makin (she/her)

Mayor Lisa Makin has deep roots in Fort Saskatchewan, both personally and professionally. She moved to the community in 1990, though her family’s connection to the area reaches back to her grandfather’s farm in the 1940s and 1950s. Lisa grew up in Fort Saskatchewan with her parents and four brothers, married her high school sweetheart, and raised her two children here. Today, her family continues to live, work, and volunteer in the community, reinforcing her lifelong connection to the city.

Lisa studied Early Learning and Childcare at MacEwan University and has operated several successful childcare programs in Fort Saskatchewan and Sherwood Park since 2011. As a local business owner and employer, she brings a practical understanding of the challenges facing families, entrepreneurs, and service providers.

Community leadership and volunteerism have been central to Lisa’s life. Over the years, she has served as President of the Fort Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Heartland Community Hospice Foundation, and a Naval Officer with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. She has also served on or supported a wide range of boards and committees, including the Policing Committee, Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board (Alternate), Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association (Alternate and Chair), Edmonton Global, Edmonton Salutes, the Midsized City Mayors Caucus, the Intermunicipal Relations Committee, the River Valley Alliance (Alternate), and social policy and advocacy forums. She is currently a board member with the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital Foundation and a foster family with SCARS.

Lisa’s interest in municipal politics grew during her time with the Chamber of Commerce, where she saw firsthand how municipal decisions shape economic development and community well-being. That experience led her to seek elected office, motivated by a desire to help guide Fort Saskatchewan’s growth in a thoughtful, community-focused way. After serving as a City Councillor, Lisa was elected Mayor, where she now brings collaborative leadership, strong community insight, and practical experience to the role.

Outside of her professional and civic responsibilities, Lisa enjoys travelling, camping, yoga, walking, and gardening, often spending time outdoors or with family.

For the current term, Mayor Makin serves on or represents the City on the following boards and committees:

  • Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association

  • City Manager’s Evaluation Committee

  • Emergency Advisory Committee

  • Inter-City Forum on Social Policy

  • Intermunicipal Relations Committee – City of Fort Saskatchewan / Strathcona County
